The Team

In June 2020, the foundation hired a Chief Communications Officer and established a new Communications Division to lead our global communications strategy and advance our vision of a more equitable world. The Global Communications team shapes and deploys our collective voice to advance our priority advocacy and program objectives, and ensure that employees are meaningfully connected to our missions and community.

Your Role

The Senior Communications Officer, DEI Communications will build and implement change and communications strategies to support the execution of the DEI strategic framework. This role will collaborate with a variety of groups to ensure consistent messaging and use of tools, and reach priority audiences across multiple internal and external channels. The role will report to the Deputy Director, Foundation Voice, with formal ties to the DEI Center of Excellence (DEI CoE).

*This is a 36-month limited-term employment position with foundation-provided benefits and relocation.

What You’ll Do

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Communications and change management strategy and planning. Partner with the DEI CoE to build and implement a communications strategy that supports the organizational change efforts guided by that team.
  • Partner with Foundation Voice colleagues and Offices of the CEO and Executive Leadership Team (ELT) members to embed DEI principles into their internal and external communications.
  • Support DEI projects and activities with change-management and communications expertise

External Communications focus:

  • Develop leadership messaging, Q&A, and complementary content related to our DEI commitment and progress
  • Propose, vet, and coordinate external engagements and media opportunities for the Chief DEI Officer and DEI CoE
  • Provide input to foundation communications that reference DEI
  • Lead risk assessment and mitigation efforts for DEI-related communications
  • Lead content creation and updates for the DEI page on external channels such as

Internal Communications focus:

  • Serve as a DEI communications resource, adviser, and thought partner to key groups in the foundation
  • Maintain a high-level view of employee, leadership, and partner communications to support the integration of DEI principles and messaging consistently throughout
  • Create and review DEI content, such as leadership talking points, video scripts, and blog posts.
  • Maintain DEI “source slides” for regular use by DEI team and internal key groups, such as foundation leadership, DEI & Gender Leads, and the DEI Leadership Council
  • Develop and maintain DEI onboarding materials, explaining our commitment and framework to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Create and coordinate a standard process for communicating about DEI-related events and opportunities hosted by ERGs, the DEI CoE, and other teams
  • Participate in cross-foundation discussions to track initiatives.
  • Contribute to discussions about when to use the foundation’s and leadership’s voice on external events/issues, coordinating with key DEI groups
  • Provide oversight and maintenance of all DEI Communication channels and content updates, including but not limited to internal SharePoint sites and newsletters
  • Provide support for Bold Conversations series
  • Co-lead monthly DEI Comms & Engagement meetings
  • Promote cultural awareness and global perspective in support of our foundation priorities and the ELT’s shared goals

Your Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in strategic internal/external communications
  • Must have subject matter expertise in DEI. Minimum 5 years’ experience including designing and delivering internal/external communication strategies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social media platforms and DEI best practices in strategic internal/external communication, including communicating to diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated abilities in writing and editing
  • Experience applying a global lens to DEI principles
  • Has in-depth knowledge and experience working with media on high-profile and/or high-risk stories
  • Demonstrated experience navigating complex organizations and building consensus around a common purpose
